Well, I’m sure you have been seeing everyone’s “word” of the year. And while, I was not going to jump on the bandwagon this year…I changed my mind.
After seeing several scopes and blog posts about what people had selected for their word of the year, I couldn’t help thinking that it is obviously very personal and can give direction and focus to the year.
So thinking about it from that perspective and feeling the nudge of a certain word, I have chosen “progress” as my word of the year.
I know. I know. Progress is probably not a word most people would pick. It’s obvious that most of us want to move forward in something this year. I realize that this is kind of a odd or simplistic word for this word of the year thing. What’s more, this choice doesn’t sound nearly as sweet as grace or friendly as other choices such as “rest”, “driven” or “intentional” but progress is what I want this year.
I was talking to my dearest friend the other day and said, “I don’t want to still be sitting in this same place a year from now. Some things have to change.”
And I mean more than my hair color! 🙂
We had some big changes this year moving but at the base some things just haven’t changed. And while many things have been out of our control, I am determined that review the things that are under my control and work to make progress in those areas.
I want to move forward. Get unstuck. Literally.
Progress. Forward. Onward Movement.
I found this task challenging but in a good way. It really made me think through what kind of progress I want to make and how that relates to areas of my life to include; my marriage, myself, my kids and this blog. I selected key words that I want for each area and am working on what that looks like in the day to day, to ensure progress is being made.
Marriage: Priority is my word. I want to make sure as we celebrate 25 years of marriage in 2016 that my marriage is at the top of my list!
Myself: Grow and Embrace. I want to be very intentional to do a few things and connect with relationships that will challenge me to grow creatively, spiritually, physically, etc. As God has been refining me in recent months, I am discovering more and more who I am in Him and I truly want to embrace those gifts and use them for His glory.
Kids: Serve. I want our family to intentionally serve others this year.
Blog/Write: Write everyday. I know it’s simple but I want to to do the hard work of writing everyday. Maybe not always post everyday but make time to write a minimum of 350-500 words every single day.
After recently working through the Unglued bible study, one of the key takeaways for me is that progress does not have to be perfect. In fact, it most often won’t be anywhere near perfect but we can continually make imperfect progress towards those things that we desire.
During this time of reflection, I also found it important to seek God through it all and ask for a scripture for the year. And He never fails.
“Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:25-26
I want to be focused on the path straight ahead to keep making progress and moving forward in 2016.
Have you picked a word for 2016? If not, it’s not too late. I encourage you to find a word that resonates with what you want in 2016 and really think through what that looks like and how it can impact your life. Then once you select your word post it someplace where you will see it everyday and make your days count.
A year from now, I pray we will all have lives that have progress(ed) in some way (even imperfectly) and that our lives are more focused on Jesus.
